Responsible Gambling in New Zealand
This page is the part of CasinoList that has nothing to do with bonuses. It collects the help lines, the exclusion tools and the bank-level blocks that work in New Zealand, and it says plainly which of them reach an offshore casino and which do not. We keep no affiliate links on this page.
Free, confidential help
Gambling Helpline Aotearoa — 0800 654 655, 24 hours a day, free from any New Zealand phone, for the person playing and for the people around them. The service also runs online at gamblinghelpline.co.nz.
Face-to-face services are funded through Health New Zealand, which lists providers by region; Safer Gambling Aotearoa runs public information and prevention work.
Self-exclusion: what it covers and what it does not
The Multi-Venue Exclusion scheme has run since 2011 and covers gaming venues on the ground. An exclusion order lasts up to two years, and it is deliberately hard to undo: it is not lifted early on request, and not on evidence that things have improved. That firmness is the point of the tool.
What it does not cover is an offshore website. No New Zealand register reaches an operator based in Malta or Curaçao, so exclusion there is whatever the operator itself offers — usually a self-exclusion form in the account settings, applied to that one brand and no other. If you ask an offshore casino to close your account, ask in writing and keep the reply.
Blocking the payment instead
A block at the bank works whether or not the casino cooperates. Westpac NZ and Kiwibank offer an opt-in gambling transaction block on their Visa debit and credit cards. ANZ, ASB and BNZ have not confirmed a dedicated switch, but their fraud filters decline a share of offshore gambling merchants anyway. A block is opt-in: nobody applies it for you.
From 1 December 2026 the credit-card ban written into the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 starts to bind operators that hold a DIA licence. It does not bind an offshore site, and it does not touch debit cards, e-wallets or crypto. Read it as a duty on future licensees, not as protection you already have.
Limits set before you play
A deposit limit is worth more than a resolution, because it is enforced by the cashier rather than by willpower at midnight. Future New Zealand licensees will have to offer configurable limits together with a 24-hour cooling-off period before any increase takes effect. Offshore operators set their own rules here, so the limit is only as good as the tool in that particular account — check it exists before the first deposit, not after.
When it stops being entertainment
Gambling is entertainment that costs money, never a way to make it. The signs worth taking seriously are ordinary ones: playing to win back what was lost, borrowing or using money meant for something else, hiding how much time or money went in, and losing interest in everything that used to compete for the evening. One of them is enough reason to call the number above.
Who can play
Casino gambling in New Zealand is for people aged 20 and over. The lower age of 18 applies to Lotto, scratch cards and betting on sports and racing — not to casino play, online or in a venue. Nothing on this site is addressed to anyone under 20.
What we do not do
We do not run a self-exclusion register, we cannot close an account for you and we cannot recover money from an operator. We are a comparison site: we publish what the operators and the regulator state, and we point at the services above, which are free and independent of us. If a page of ours ever reads as pressure to deposit, that is a defect — tell us through contact us and we will rewrite it.
